Meet our Staff

Dr. Steven Sloan, Optometrist

A native of Dubuque, Dr. Steve Sloan received his undergraduate degree in biology from Loras College. He then attended Illinois College of Optometry for his Doctor of Optometry degree, graduating in 1982. Dr. Sloan has served as President of the Iowa Optometric Association Board of Directors. He was selected by a professional journal as one of the 21 outstanding young optometrists in the United States. He has also been active on many community and church boards and committees. In his spare time, Dr. Sloan enjoys traveling, sports, and spending time with his family. He and his wife, Julie, are the parents of four children: Philip, Katie, Stephanie and Ben.

Dr. Martha Smith, Optometrist

Also from Dubuque, Dr. Smith received her undergraduate degree from Augustana College in 1992. She graduated valedictorian of her class at the Illinois College of Optometry in 1996. After receiving her Doctor of Optometry degree, Dr. Smith completed a residency in ocular disease and low vision rehabilitation at the Kansas City V.A. Medical Center. Dr. Smith is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Heart of America Contact Lens Society, and the Fellowship of Christian Optometrists. She also serves as a Clinical Examiner for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry. Dr. Smith enjoys spending spare time at home with her family. She and her husband, Bryan, have three daughters: Emily, Bethany, Vivian.

Sandy - Front Office Team Leader, Bellevue

Sandy has been with the Bellevue office since June of 1992 as our front office team leader. Among her many duties, she can be found filing insurance claims and scheduling your next appointments. She also educates patients about the latest contact lenses available and shows our new contact lens patients how to properly wear and take care of their lenses. In addition, Sandy attends many continuing education classes to maintain her extensive knowledge of Medicare and other types of insurance. Sandy enjoys reading, spending time on the river and is involved in the Bellevue Community Club. She and her husband, Joel, have three children: Tom, Megan and Molly, and live in Bellevue.

Kim – Clinic Team Leader, Bellevue

She has over 15 years of customer service experience and with her warm smile and great personality she strives to make your visit pleasant and enjoyable. When Kim is away from the office, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, outdoor activities, gardening and reading.Kim joined our Bellevue team in early 2007.

Kathy - Frame Fashion Consultant

You will see Kathy’s smiling face as you enter Vision Health Center. Kathy has over 17 years of customer service experience. Kathy enjoys meeting and assisting all of the patients that come to Vision Health Center and she works to make sure that each patient’s experience is an enjoyable one.

Kathy enjoys reading and flower gardening and spending time with her friends and family, including her husband Tom, and three children, Kieffer, Clare and Gwen.

Jenny - Certified Optician, Dubuque

Jenny has ten years experience in the optical field and has been certified by the American Board of Opticianary since 1998. She joined the Vision Health Center team after relocating from Iowa City to her hometown of Dubuque. Jenny's extensive knowledge of frame designs and understanding of spectacle lens technology provides our patients with the best combination of frames and lenses to fit their individual needs. It is a hobby of hers to collect eccentric eyewear (Elton John is her role model).

Tempie – Front Office Team Leader, Dubuque

Tempie graduated from University of Nevada in Las Vegas with a Bachelors in Marketing. She has 11 years of experience in the optometry field working as a technician and patient educator. In addition to many technical skills she possesses in contact lenses and optometry testing, she attends to all the demanding details of patient care in a busy optometric practice.

When Tempie isn't hard at work, you will find her shopping and spending time with her family: Matt, Ryan, and Kayla

Rose – Insurance and Billing Specialist, Dubuque

With over 15 years of experience in the optical field. Rose will assist you in finding the best frame, one that is both current and looks great. When Rose is away from the office she really enjoys spending her time with her family, reading, gardening and of course spoiling her grand children.

Lisa – Patient Care Coordinator, Dubuque

Lisa, a Dubuque native, graduated from Clarke College with a Bachelor's in Social Work. She has a combined 15 years experience in patient care and customer service. Lisa is excited to be exploring the optical field and looks forward to helping you feel comfortable during your visit to our office.

When away from work, Lisa enjoys time volunteering as a Bible teacher, spending time with her amazing teenagers (Matthew, Emma ), and hiking.

Brenda – Clinic Team Leader, Dubuque

Brenda joined our team in September 2010. She comes to VHC with a background in ophthalmology.

Missy – Patient Care Coordinator, Dubuque

Missy is a third year student at the University of Dubuque.  She is currently working toward a Biology Major, her long term goal is to be accepted into the Illinois College of Optometry. Missy puts forth her best effort to make sure each patient receives the quality care and sees that all of  their individual needs are met.You can see her conducting a variety of tasks, from front desk duties, frame style selection, to pretesting the patients before they see the doctor.

Stephanie -  Patient Care Coordinator   

A native Dubuquer, Stephanie did her undergraduate studies at Augustana College in the Quad Cities. She was accepted into Augustana’s 3-4 program with Illinois College of Optometry, granting her the opportunity to bypass her senior year at Augustana and start optometry school a year sooner. At ICO, Stephanie was voted the American Optometric Student Association Trustee-Elect, representing the school on a national level. Stephanie is also a member of Student Volunteers for Optometric Service to Humanity, the Private Practice club, and she holds a position on the Student Association Board. Though her studies and school activities keep her busy, Stephanie loves spending free time with her new friends at school and her family in Dubuque. With over six years of experience in the optometric field and only a few more years at ICO, Stephanie is thrilled to be pursuing her dream of becoming an optometrist.

Becky - Certified Optician, Dubuque

Becky has 15 years of experience in the optical field and has been certified since May 2002. Her and her husband, Chad have three children; Chris, Caitlin, and Camryn. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, attending kids sporting events, watching Iowa football and the Cubs. She is also a member of the East Dubuque warrior booster club & is a volunteer softball coash for the East Dubuque girls city league.
