Meet Our Doctors

Dr. Steven Sloan, Optometrist

A native of Dubuque, Dr. Steve Sloan received his undergraduate degree in biology from Loras College. He then attended Illinois College of Optometry for his Doctor of Optometry degree, graduating in 1982. Dr. Sloan has served as President of the Iowa Optometric Association Board of Directors. He served as the Iowa representative to the Board of Directors of the Heart of America Eye Care Congress. He is currently on the Loras College Board of Regents as a Board Director. He has also been active on many community and church boards and committees. Early in his career, Dr. Sloan was selected by a professional journal as one of the 21 outstanding young optometrists in the United States.In his spare time, Dr. Sloan enjoys traveling, sports, and spending time with his family. He and his wife, Julie, are the parents of four children: Philip, Katie and her husband Dan, Stephanie and her husband Luke, and Ben. They also have two grandchildren, Norah and Cameron. 

Dr. Martha Smith, Optometrist

Also from Dubuque, Dr. Smith received her undergraduate degree from Augustana College in 1992. She graduated valedictorian of her class at the Illinois College of Optometry in 1996. After receiving her Doctor of Optometry degree, Dr. Smith completed a residency in ocular disease and low vision rehabilitation at the Kansas City V.A. Medical Center. Dr. Smith is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Heart of America Contact Lens Society, and the Fellowship of Christian Optometrists. She also serves as a Clinical Examiner for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry. Dr. Smith enjoys spending spare time at home with her family. She and her husband, Bryan, have three daughters: Emily, Bethany, Vivian.

Dr. Stephanie (Sloan) Flamich, Optometrist

Raised in Dubuque, Dr. Stephanie Flamich received her undergraduate degree in Biology through an accelerated program from Augustana College. She then attended Illinois College of Optometry where she graduated with her Doctor of Optometry degree and received the Clinical Excellence Award. After graduation, Dr. Stephanie completed a post-doctoral Residency in Ocular Disease with an emphasis on ocular emergency and trauma at the Illinois Eye Institute in Chicago, Illinois. She has served as a Trustee for the American Optometric Student Association and is a member of the Gold Key International Optometric Honor Society, Tomb & Key Honor Fraternity, and Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Society. In 2018, Dr. Stephanie Flamich was awarded Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry. Professionals who become Fellows of the Academy must complete a rigorous candidacy process including extensive written work and pass an oral examination. Fewer than ten percent of practicing optometrists are Fellows of the Academy.

In her free time, Dr. Stephanie enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends. She and her husband, Luke, have a daughter: Norah. 

Dr. Lucas S. Flamich, Optometrist

Dr Lucas Flamich, orginally from the Chicagoland area, received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2009. He then pursued his medical training at the Illinois college of Optometry where he earned academic and clinical honors, was awarded the Metro optic Contact Lens Scholarship, and graduated Magna Cum Laude to earn his Doctor of Optometry degree in 2014. 

After graduation, Dr. Flamich completed a post-doctoral Residency in Ocular Disease at the Huntington VA Medical Center in West Virginia. After residency, he continued to serve the Huntington veterans while mentoring optometry student externs as an Adjunct Faculty Instructor of the Illinois College of Optometry, Indiana University School of Optometry, and The Ohio state University College of Optometry. He then returned to the Midwest and has established roots in Dubuque, and is thrilled to be part of the Vision Health Center and the surrounding communities. He is a member of the Beta Sigma kappa Honor Society, Tomb and Key Honor Fraternity, and American Optometric Association. Dr. Flamich focuses on providing comprehensive eye care, with an emphasis on ocular disease management, and a special interest in contact lens fittings that include custom and advanced designs.

Dr. Flamich and his wife, Stephanie, have a daughter, Norah, and enjoy outdoor activities, sports, cooking, traveling and spending time with family, friends and their dog Otis.
