Janelle graduated from NICC with her Associate's Degree in Nursing in 2015 and has 10 years and counting of experience working in the medical field. She joined the VHC team in 2019 and has worked hard to follow continuing education courses on dry eye, diabetic retinopathy, and other medical diagnoses to keep up with the latest symptoms and treatment plans. She assists with pretesting and setting up referrals for surgery. Janelle loves interacting with the patients and strives to make their time with us enjoyable. In her free time, she loves going to concerts, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
Born and raised in Eastern Iowa, Nikki has been a friendly face in the community. She has been with our clinic since January 2020, and has over 25 years of experience working with sales and customer service. her favorite part of working at VHC is finding the perfect frames and specialty lenses for every patient. Outside of work, you can find Nikki spending time with her husband, Mike, and their two boys, Mason and Max. She enjoys running, cooking, and working in her yard by the river.
With over nine years of dedicated experience in optometry, Angie brings both technical precision and heartfelt patient care to every exam. Originally from Bellevue, Iowa, she spent three decades honing her skills in Minnesota before returning to her hometown to rejoin the local community’s vision care efforts.
Throughout her career, Angie has developed a strong proficiency in ophthalmic diagnostics, patient education, and assisting with comprehensive eye exams. Her professional journey has shaped a well-rounded approach to eye health, combining technical knowledge with genuine empathy. Back home in Bellevue, she’s proud to support patients of all ages with clear vision and personalized service.
Outside the clinic, Angie likes traveling with her husband Steve and making memories at home with her family.
Wendi is the Patient Care Coordinator in the Bellevue clinic, where she’s been assisting patients since June 2025. Born and raised in eastern Iowa, Wendi brings more than 30 years of work experience focused on positive interactions and intuitive care.
Before stepping into healthcare, Wendi spent a decade in education, earning her BA in Education and building the kind of communication and empathy that now guide her work with patients every day. She also spent over 20 years in customer service and quality assurance, learning the importance of consistency, respect, and attention to detail.
Outside the clinic, Wendi loves to travel, attend Green Bay Packers games, and spend time with her husband Larry and their family. She’s especially proud to be “Grandma” to two grandsons, Lane and Levi, who keep her laughing and remind her to celebrate life.
Deb joined the Vision Health Center family in September 2025 as a Billing and Insurance Specialist. Born and raised in eastern Iowa, she has 30+ years of healthcare experience in hospital, provider, and payer environments. Her focus is to ensure claims are processed and paid accurately and timely. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, John, and son, Steven, while carving out time to spoil friendly dogs with love and treats. Returning to golfing may be in her future after she finds the right pair of glasses that will be the key to perfecting her game.
Jenny has 25 years of experience in the optical field and has been certified by the American Board of Opticianry since 1998. She joined the Vision Health Center team after relocating from Iowa City to her hometown of Dubuque. Jenny's extensive knowledge of frame designs and understanding of spectacle lens technology provide our patients with the best combination of frames and lenses to fit their individual needs. She is always looking for new pieces to add to the office and to her own collection of eccentric eyewear.
In October of 2009, I was helping a patient pick out a new pair of glasses. We chose a few frames and sat down to try them on. I told him the first frame he was trying on, a retro-styled plastic frame, was one of my favorites. Unfortunately, they did not fit him. I joked, “I love this frame. Someday, someone is going to get this frame and I will have to marry him.” He smiled and joked back, “Then I guess I’ll have to get that one.” After trying on about a dozen more frames, he ended up with a similar retro-styled frame that I liked almost as much. When I asked him what phone number I should call when his glasses were ready, he gave me his cell phone number. Then he asked me what phone number he should call to ask me for dinner. He wore that frame two years later when we stood at the altar and said “I do”. Three pairs of glasses later, we welcomed our first child, Vivian.
Tempie graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, with a bachelor's degree in Marketing and brings over 30 years of experience in the optometry field. Having worked as a technician and patient educator, she combines her deep clinical knowledge with a creative eye for marketing and patient engagement.
As Vision Health Center’s Marketing and Front Office Team Leader, Tempie oversees patient communications, community outreach, and all things social media—crafting engaging campaigns that showcase the practice’s people, products, and purpose. From health fairs and chamber events to digital storytelling across platforms, she’s passionate about connecting with the community and helping patients see (and feel) their best.
When she’s not curating VHC’s next campaign or organizing an event, Tempie enjoys spending time with her family—Matt, Ryan, and Kayla.

Ellen began working with Dr. Sloan as his first optometric assistant when he began seeing patients in 1982. Ellen graduated from Loras College with degrees in Elementary and Early Childhood Education. She was a teacher for 25 years in Cedar Rapids and Dubuque and then went on to work at a church for 7 years. In 2019, the VHC team was happy to welcome Ellen back. She is responsible for insurance claims and billing.
Ellen and her husband, Brian, have three adult children and 5 grandkids. In her free time, Ellen enjoys photography, volunteering, and traveling to the beach.
Angie a Dubuque native is an amazing asset to the VHC Team. With over 28 years of experience in Optomology testing. She has found her place as a leader and continues to educate the rest of our staff with her extensive knowledge. Angie loves everything about eyecare, from the start of the exam to the frame selection process. Sheenjoys getting to know each patient and following up with them about their families. She very excited to welcome the former Ophthalmology PC patients to the VHC family.
When she's not busy in the office she enjoys traveling and boating with family and friends. Her favorite hobby is spending quality time with her 3 kids and grandchildren.
Kristina is a Dubuque native who has over 20 years of nursing and rehab experience working with patients. She is a vital part of our clinic team and will often begin your examination by performing some tests and obtaining your health information. Since joining the VHC team, she has absorbed a wealth of information and is eager to grow with our office to help our patients receive the best possible care.
When Kristina is away from the office you can often find her hanging out at the local farmers market or tending to her garden and plants. Kristina and her husband Jeff, have a son named Eben.
Riley graduated from Loras College in May 2025 with a double major in Biology/Spanish and a chemistry minor. She has been a part of the VHC team as a Clinic Intern since May 2024. She is gaining excellent knowledge and building numerous valuable patient relationships as she prepares for optometry school, which begins in Fall 2026. When she is not in the office, Riley enjoys visiting her family in Marquette, IA, and spending lots of time outdoors.
Bethany returned to the VHC front desk after college; she graduated from Central College in May 2025, with a bachelor's in kinesiology and a minor in psychology. She is currently working on her doctorate in occupational therapy at St. Ambrose University. In her spare time she likes to bake, go for walks with her dog Rosie, and go for road trips.
